John Meko

John Meko is a former Philly POPS’ co-op student, and has been with the POPS for over 6 years! John received a M.M. in Jazz Performance at Temple University in spring of 2022. John comes from a family of trumpeters — starting with his grandfather, his father, and now himself. At Temple, John studies under POPS Artistic Director for Jazz Terell Stafford.

Six years ago, John Meko heard about an internship opportunity with the POPS, and the rest is history! John began his musical journey as a student at LaSalle High School, where he learned to play trumpet. He continued pursuing his passion for music with a bachelor’s degree, and later a M.M. at Temple University. Today, John still works at the POPS as the Education and Community Engagement Associate.

John made his debut with the POPS at PARX Casino for Big Band Broadway with Ashley Brown in June 2019! He later performed in the Kimmel Center Lobby for the pre-concert entertainment before POPS Goes to Hollywood. Finally, he finished 2019 performing in The Philly POPS Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia’s Holiday Celebration under the direction of his teacher and mentor, POPS Artistic Director for Jazz Terell Stafford!

Having started while in high school, John’s position at the POPS was his first job. Since then, he’s worked with every department at the POPS — helping with sales, production, marketing, education, development, and more! While with the POPS, he’s learned plenty of skills that help him both in the office, and as a working musician.
