All-City Jazz Festival Kicks off POPS in Schools Program

Jul 1, 2015

On Tuesday, June 9, the best of the best young jazz musicians of the School District of Philadelphia gathered at the Prince Theater to participate in Philly’s All-City Jazz Festival. It was an incredible night for the student musicians as they were able to experience the satisfaction of playing in a theater in front of a large audience, meet fellow musicians, and show off their amazing musical talents, all with the support of the POPS.

The performance showcased two jazz charts from each of nine participating schools in addition to the All-Star Band, comprised of students recommended by their teachers for an audition process. The All-Stars were conducted by acclaimed trumpet player, Terell Stafford. The event was hosted by CAPA alumna and singer/songwriter Jacqueline Constance who performed a rousing rendition of “Summertime” to start the show.

The presentation of Philly’s All City Jazz Festival highlighted the formation of a new partnership between the Philly POPS and the School District of Philadelphia. This partnership will be extended in the fall with an ongoing set of educational activities under the POPS in Schools umbrella. POPS in Schools brings POPS musicians and guest artists, coupled with the appeal of jazz, pop, and rock music, directly into classrooms throughout the school year while also providing young musicians with access to POPS concerts and rehearsals.
