The Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia returns to the stage to celebrate Philadelphian and Jazz Pianist McCoy Tyner.

“This performance is one in a JOP series highlighting the work of jazz’s most accomplished performers. The Jazz Orchestra always presents flawlessly. Terell’s work in connecting today’s jazz to its illustrious past, particularly a past rooted in Philadelphia, never fails to amaze” said Karen Corbin, Chief Operating Officer of The Philly POPS.

The concert will feature The Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, under the direction of POPS Artistic Director for Jazz, Terell Stafford, and will present the music of legendary jazz pianist and Philadelphian McCoy Tyner. Tyner released 76 records between 1962 and 2009 as leader of a variety of ensembles and performed as an accomplished guest in dozens of others, often with fellow Philadelphian John Coltrane. His extensive career garnered five Grammy awards as well as the title of National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. He is considered one of the most influential jazz pianists of all time.

“McCoy Tyner is the most powerful and dynamic piano player of the 21st century,” said Artistic Director for Jazz Terell Stafford. “As a pianist, McCoy Tyner found a way to raise the bar every time he played. The energy and excitement that he achieved with a piano were untouchable.”

Joining the program are guest piano solists Eric Reed (Yamaha Performing Artist) and Bruce Barth. POPS Jazz Orchestra pianist Joshua Richman will be featured as a soloist while also performing as a JOP member.

“When I think about piano players that represent the history of jazz piano, Bruce and Eric are truly a natural fit to represent the music and style of McCoy Tyner,” Stafford said. “They both have incredibly special places in their hearts for McCoy. The way they both accompany is very much in McCoy’s style and they embody his spirit.”

Bruce Barth, Guest Pianist

More

Jazz pianist and composer Bruce Barth has been sharing his music with listeners the world over for more than twenty-five years. In addition to traveling widely performing his own music, he has also performed with revered jazz masters, as well as collaborated with leading musicians of his own generation. And in a recent review in the Newark Star-Ledger, Zan Stewart writes “No one sounds quite like Barth. His solos are characterized by robust swing, his ability to tell a story, and by his rich, beguiling sound.”

Bruce has performed on over 125 recordings and movie soundtracks, including fifteen as a leader. He is equally at home playing solo piano (American Landscape on Satchmo Jazz Records), leading an all-star septet (East and West on MaxJazz), and composing for a variety of ensembles. His trio has recorded live at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York City, and his duo recording with saxophonist Steve Wilson, Home, was chosen by Down Beat magazine as one of the best recordings of 2010. Last summer, his trio appeared at several major European festivals, including San Sebastian, La Spezia, and San Javier, where Bruce shared the bill with Chick Corea’s trio. His current release is “Sunday,” recorded live in Spain and featuring tenor saxophonist giant Jerry Bergonzi.

Originally from Pasadena, California, Bruce arrived on the New York jazz scene in 1988, and soon started working in the bands of Stanley Turrentine and Terence Blanchard. While in Terence’s band, Bruce recorded his first two CD’s as a leader, In Focus and Morning Call for the Enja label; both were chosen for the New York Times’ top ten lists. These recordings displayed not only Bruce’s powerfully fluent piano playing, but also the scope of his own compositions and his imaginative arrangements of jazz standards.

Eric Reed, Guest Pianist

More

When you think of hard-driving swing, daring expression, sophistication and elegance in artistry, formidable technique and a thunderous sound, there are only a small handful of pianists you think of and one of them is most assuredly ERIC SCOTT REED.

Eric was born in the musically rich city of Philadelphia, PA. He grew up playing in his father's storefront Baptist church: "My father was a minister who sang with a Gospel group called the Bay State Singers; he was my earliest musical influence. I was also hit heavily by everything I heard on the radio - James Cleveland, Edwin & Walter Hawkins, Andraé Crouch, Donny Hathaway, Earth, Wind & Fire." Soon after, young Reed was bitten by the Jazz bug after hearing recordings by Art Blakey, Ramsey Lewis and Dave Brubeck.

He garnered great notice as a permanent member of Wynton Marsalis' ensembles (1990-95), making countless recordings and TV appearances with him. He also worked in the bands of Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson (1991-92) after which his résumé would flourish with names such as Wayne Shorter, Jessye Norman, Patti Labelle, Edwin Hawkins, Quincy Jones, Natalie Cole and numerous others. Eric has recorded over twenty chart-topping, critically-acclaimed, award-winning projects, supported by global performances to appreciative audiences. Such accomplishments and hard work have not gone unnoticed by legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal, who has called Eric "one of my very favorite pianists."

Beyond playing the piano, Reed expanded his scope to Hollywood, composing and arranging music for the Eddie Murphy comedy, Life, various other independent projects for Fantastic Four director and high-school chum Tim Story, plus commercials and TV spots. Annually, he serves as musical conductor for choreographer Alvin Ailey's classic Revelations with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, under the direction of Judith Jamison. An ardent educator, Eric served on the faculty of the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. He continues to perform worldwide master classes that cover the full spectrum of Jazz history and discography.
